LaPorte Officer Brian Phillips

There is a new museum in
Indianapolis. The American Super Heroes Museum in located in
downtown Indianapolis at 20 W. Louisiana St. The museum deals
with fictional and real hero displays. Every 90 days the museum
honors a different officer. Ronald Manley, IPD, killed in the
line of duty 12/12/1974, is the first Hero to be honored. A
display with a family photo, uniform, and various mementos
reflects the true Hero in Ron Manley.
INDIANA COPS HAS A OFFICE
When Indiana COPS split from
Illiana COPS ten years ago, Molly Winters, (Officer Gregg
Winters, Muncie Police Department, EOW January 8, 1991) had a
vision and a dream for the chapter. She envisioned COPS having a
strong presence in Indiana, and being a guiding influence for
survivors as they learned to carry on with their lives after the
lose of their loved one. She dreamed that a survivor would be
able to reach out at anytime and make contact with some one if
for no other reason than to talk at 2AM when they were unable to
sleep. For those of you who might not know Molly, she is a past
president of Indiana COPS, a past national trustee for the Great
Lakes Regional for National COPS, and a past president of
National COPS. Molly genuinely believes in the COPS organization
and the help and healing than can afford to survivors, be they
family or co-workers. Molly would be the one letting Tim
Althouse, (Officer Jake Laird, Indianapolis Police Department,
EOW August 18, 2004), do all the peddling. The endowment the
Cook Group has accomplished the things she dreamed of and more.
As of the beginning of November, Indiana COPS officially has a
central point of contact as Molly became the part time employee
for us as an office was established. It was mentioned in the
holiday cards sent out to everyone and I just wanted to
reiterate it here so everyone can make note of the e-mail
address and phone numbers. The e-mail address is indianacops@indianacops.com.
There is a toll-free number for the office, 866-442-COPS, or a
local number of 317-468-1007. The office fax number is
317-468-1008. The official office hours are
Monday-Wednesday-Friday from 9AM to 3PM, but there is an
answering machine that is checked frequently.
COPS ESTABLISHES PILOT PROGRAM
Indiana COPS has established a
pilot program with Dr. Bill Shipley, head of the White River
Psychology, Inc. to assist survivors as they deal with the loss
of their loved one. Dr. Shipley has agreed to provide counseling
to survivors, regardless if you are family, friend or co-worker.
He also provides children services. Indiana COPS has made
arrangements to cover the cost of all sessions and provide this
service to all survivors at no cost. This is a pilot program and
we encourage anyone interested in utilizing Dr. Shipley’s
service to aid them with the healing process, to contact either
Dr. Shipley directly at 317-684-7171, or contact Molly Winters
at the Indiana COPS office and she will make the arrangements
for you. We will reevaluate the program after a brief time and
if it is proceeding as we anticipate and hope, then we will
establish a similar program in northern and southern Indiana.
